What is Drummunity?

A ”Drummunity” circle is a high energy, fun and empowering activity for any group. Lori Fithian, drum circle facilitator and workshop leader, will bring her collection of hand drums and percussion toys to your location to transform your community into a “Drummunity” – a word she invented for the community-building that happens when people come together around a circle of drums.

Lori has graciously donated her time and talent to Ann Arbor's Take Back the Night for the past three years. She brings an assortment of drums--from pickle barrels with sticks to hand drums--to share with everyone and encourages others to bring their own drums. drummunity1.png

Drummunity brings the crowd together before the rally begins at 7pm. When we start to march, the drumming builds and sustains our energy.   Drumming gives a voice to those who may not be able to chant. It offers an outlet to the anger, pain, relief, psychological catharsis and even joy that can accompany an event like Take Back the Night. It provides another way to express the power that comes from publicly affirming the transition from victim to survivor.

We deeply appreciate Drummunity's presence at the rally and march and hope Lori will continue to be involved with this important event for years to come.

  More about Lori and Drummunity...

Lori Fithian has been facilitating drum circles and leading workshops for the past five years. She has played hand drums and studied many different drumming traditions since lori1.png1990. However, playing on tupperware bowls as a child seems to be the real beginning of her rhythmical career. Having played the French horn since the fifth grade, she brings a life-long love of music and rhythm to her drum circles and workshops. A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Art, Lori worked as an artist for many years before re-discovering her love of music in the world of hand-drumming.

Her love for people and the desire to share her rhythmical bliss led her to create her life’s work, Drummunity. Influenced by many drumming traditions – West African, Brazilian, Japanese, Afro-Cuban, Middle Eastern − Lori’s Drummunity program has developed into an exciting, hands-on, family program with a message of community-building, peace, diversity, wellness, ecology, and rhythmic fun! Now she travels around with her drums and enthusiastic spirit, creating rhythm and community wherever she goes.
